Drought

Well the drought continues here, but the hyrdo station took a wee break for the weekend and stopped dumping water on us. Fished from 7 to 11 and apart from a lot of small fish to nymphs early evening it was quite depressing. Very few rising fish at dusk and those that were were small. Although there is almost three months left in the season I am seriously questioning whether I will fish if the rain ceases. These fish will need every once of energy they can muster for the winter, with such poor feeding, being caught a few times may prove fatal for many of them. Big.... big moral dilemma for all anglers on such a river.

I know your dilema. I have started to slow down on my fishing as well. Water temps are sky rocketing.

Well. Freezing down here. heavy snow on the hills and heavy frosts on the flats. Just back from Australia and it was freezing there too..... Filthy head cold and though the rivers look good, the fish will be busy spawning in my neck o the woods so will leave them alone for another 4 - 6 weeks.....

The Colorado Division of Wildlife has asked for fly fishermen to voluntarily stop fishing a few creeks and small rivers here in Western Colorado. The department also stated that the year round fishing season may be closed in certain areas due to low flows brought on by the drought. High water temperatures and low oxygen levels are expected in most water sheds until late Fall.

I dont know yet. We will have to watch the weather, and hope for the best. The Gunnison is technically a Tail Water where I fish it. It has gone through 3 hydro electric dams about 20 miles upstream. The water should stay fairly cool if the flows dont drop any more.

My fear is that the CDOW will call for an end to the fishing season for the entire region or State.

If we have to fish the San Juan, I have the patterns that should produce. They are size 20's and may be a tad big, but should still work.

Body - Gray thread
Collar - Hen Hackle



I tyed a few up in different colored thread and different color hackle.
I need to go buy some more hooks.

The San Juan would be just in case the rivers are shut down here.
