John,
Call Charlie @ Collins Hackle Farm and talk with him about exactly what you're looking for color wise.
(607) 734-1765
I told him I wanted the "darkest medium dun" he had and this showed up..................

John,
What pattern are you tying? A dark dun Whiting 4B hen cape would have worked on flies that large. While you wait for the Collins capes, a mottled feather from a partridge's back ties a right handsome green drake emerging nymph. --Phil

Jus leetle feller maybe a 14 or 12. Looks like a cornuta on the Beaverkill.
Absolutely what you want is a California quail.

Something that dark, I'd give jackdaw, maybe even coot a try.

I'd suggest a waterhen from Cookshill. Buy two while you're at it. Steve takes credit cards.

Gentlemen, thank you for the suggestions. I do have a wonderful, "'
stinky" Jackdaw head from Steve from across the pond.
I am not ordering anymore. I have 4 COLLINS DARK DUN HEN CAPES coming. They are TROUT APPROVED!
Interesting note, I have been researching the Western Green Drake and it appears the duns actually start to emerge below the surface, which makes it ideal for a soft hackle pattern. Yet, I don't see any of the Western shops selling a soft hackle Green Drake pattern. So I am working on one to try out West.
May I suggest if you look in the archives their are a few soft hackle / emerger green drake patterns. I have used Eric Peper ,UC Steve patterns on the Fork and also Jim S. Green drake flymph pattern.
Charlie has very good hackle.
