Quail skins

I bought a couple of quail skins off eBay. Can anyone identify the kind of quail? They don’t look like bobwhites. Anyway, only tied a couple of flies, but my first impressions are positive. Well, the coloring is much lighter than I expected. But, the stems appear to be pretty durable. The barn count is okay. The feather splays well when hackled. I like! Will be great for what, PMDs?

I believe those are Coturnix quail, named after the genus in which several related species are classified.

Agreed. The top skin looks like a buff coturnix skin to me, due to the mottled tan coloration. The bottom skin in your photo has much lighter markings. It may be a coturnix, but the pale markings make wonder if it might be something else. Perhaps they are simply male and female versions, or the lighter one may be a young bird.

I posted a photo of the single buff coturnix (Japanese quail) I own. I picked this up from Joe Fox (Dette Flies) several years ago. I'd never seen one before, so I had to grab it. (impulse buy)

Beautiful flies, by the way. Nice to see you putting the skins to good use so quickly.
