Wow! Those are really nice John. The Gambles Quail has such a nice fun coloration. The hackle looks sorta like a miniature waterhen hackle.

Outstanding pattern btw. They will hunt!

John ~ Your excellent post brings back memories of a few years back when I found a Gambel's quail skin at a fly show ...

Beautiful flies and photos! Blue Ribbon is such a great source for SH feathers.
The cork is also a great prop!! ;)

Hi John,

Very nice flies, as always. I still have a couple of Gambel's quail skins from birds that I killed when I was stationed in Yuma, AZ. The farmers loved it when we killed a few, they would really tear up some newly sprouted crops. Very tough birds to hunt without a dog!

The feathers have a nice coloration for matching the larger spring mayflies...I tie up and fish a Hendrickson soft hackle/emerger pattern with it.

Best,

Tim

Very similar to waterhen; makes a good sub.
