Prairie Chicken Skin

Post by letumgo » Sun Jun 11, 2023 10:22 am

Feather-Craft recently posted that they had gotten a batch of Prairie Chicken Skins (see link below). I have never seen them listed for sale before, so I had to buy one while they were available.

My skin arrived earlier this week (see picture below). The feathers look like they will work beautifully for soft hackles & flymphs. The coloration and markings looks like a cross between a Golden Plover & Hungarian Partridge. The flank feathers remind me a of Chukar or French Partridge.

I am in no way affiliated with Feather-Craft. Just a customer. Simply wanted to give you guys a heads-up, about a rarely available gamebird skin.

That is a beautiful pattern on that skin. I will try to get one before they sell out because I'm sure they will go fast.

That is a beautiful skin! But, I gotta put the brakes on my spending for a while. Had too many unexpected bills come up recently. I will probably be sorry later when they are all gone, but unfortunately gotta say no. Thanks for the heads up Ray.

Ray,

There you go again with your inspiration! 8-) :D

This is literally a blast from the past in Eastern Oregon. My one and only similar skin came from a jackrabbit hunting trip over 40 years ago. I was using my Uncle Cleve's .22/410 Ga over and under. It was great in the narrow dry creek bed I was walking. Select the .22 for a standing rabbit, or the 410 for a running one or possibly a wing shot at a Sage Hen.

Now I have to come up with a simple Flymph and a Soft Hackle tomorrow with my old skin. ;)

Ray, I found one of your flies from a long time ago in FTF, using prairie chicken hackle. It really does look like plover.

How small does the hackle get? Size 10 is just about the largest soft hackle I usually tie.
