Stupid question...when you say "Heron variation", is that the material heron (as in feather from a heron) or the name of a person?

I like this fly. It sort of looks like a cross between a muddler and a hornberg (tyed in-the-round). I'd be tempted to add a dash of yellow to the pattern (hornberg nod).

From what I can find, the original Wooduck Heron was a New Hampshire pattern developed by Nick Lambrou; not sure if he was inspired by salmon/spey flies that used heron for hackle.

You have yet again inspired me to try this beautiful, yet appearing to be very simple to tie, pattern! I like the look of the wood duck flank feathers which always make a pattern look great! This thing has smallmouth bass written all over it! I would suspect a trout or two as well!
