Simple, buggy. Seems to share some genetic code with a Gartside Sparrow, which is not a bad thing. Maybe not quite a flymph, but a cool bug anyway so I thought I'd share.


hook - Dai Riki 280 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 brown
tail - partridge
body - peacock herl
rib - pheasant aftershaft
hackle - partridge
bead - 1/8" black


mash barb, slide on bead, start thread, wrap to bend




measure (shank length) partridge (2 feathers used here); tie in






tie in some peacock, wrap to bead; tie off/trim, return thread to bend








split thread, insert aftershaft feather, spin bobbin, moisten, stroke back while wrap to bead















tie in partridge by tip




wrap, tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

"Buggy" is right, Scott, and more than just a little "wooly" as well. I can easily imagine this in a Size #8 or #6 bringing smallmouth on the run ... er, swim . Thanks for sharing this.

Scott, this looks great. Ray taught me to tie a Raccoon (?) pattern that is similar. He uses it for steelheads and they work great. I can't remember now the differences between what you've tied and the coon pattern, but they were certainly cousins. This does look like a killer smallie pattern. Nice sbs. Thanks.

Thanks folks. William, here's a version of Skip Morris' Racoon I tied up for my trip to Alaska this summer. Never ended up using it but I'm sure it would have worked well on pinks; everything else we threw at them worked.

underbody - non-tox .030
thread - UTC 140 hot pink
tail - grizzly hen
abdomen - Ice Dub UV hot pink
hackle - grizzly hen

Scott - I have caught a lot of fish on Skip Morris' Raccoon pattern. I especially like the black version and white version of this fly. I've tried the pink, but will less success than with the black or white versions.

My versions are not tyed as nicely as yours, but they still catch fish like crazy.

I beg to differ; they're all beautiful. I really like the white one; did you use mallard for the hackle?

I used wood duck flank feathers. Dry fly guys will shudder at this next statement, but wood duck flank makes a wonderful hackle material for wet flies.

Scott, thanks for the extra pics. The black Raccoon that Ray shows (thanks Ray) is what I was thinking of. I believe its a prespun wire dubbed body. I like these little streamers a lot. I don't get to do a lot of streamer drifting but I've seen enough evidence for these to put them in my pack. Nice pics.
