I was watching Chris tye flies during the recent Guys-Flies-Pies event and he pulled out a cool little dubbing brush tool he had made. I asked Chris if I could try it out and he said sure go ahead. He later gifted it to me. I figured I would post photos of it here, so others can make their own.

The main tool is made from 1/8" diameter brass tubing (4-5/8" long). The end of the tubing has been flattened (roughly 3/4") to allow a narrow strip of velcro to be epoxied to the tubing. This creates a thin flat velcro strip, small enough to use on small flies. This is ideally suited for little soft hackle flies. Chris slipped a section of clear junction tubing over the metal to form a comfortable handle. (Junction tubing is the stuff used for tube flies.)

Thanks Chris, this tool is great!

More elegant than my solution, which is just to put a piece of velcro on a popsicle stick.

Thanks, Ray --

But to give credit where credit is due, I first saw a tool like this being used by Nick Pionessa, who runs Oak Orchard Fly Shop.

The nice thing about this tool -- and the advantage over popsicle sticks and the like -- is that it is relatively thin, and one can easily get between the shank and the hook point on smaller sized hooks.

Great photography, Ray!

Very cool.... and a little less "agricultural" than my own use of a .22 calibre bronze bore brush.

Here's mine - the other end of the "fuzzer-upper" works as a half-hitch tool. The one below is a dentist's root canal drill glued into a buffalo tooth. Works well for smaller flies.

Buffalo tooth dubbing brushes. I have officially seen everything now, I think.

That's great!
