Ray, Howdy;
Having slept on this project of your's I had
a moment (they are rare), of clarity reguarding
Jeff's suggestion;
"A couple of short lengths of 1/4" threaded rod will hold thread and wire spools. Glued/captive nut and washer on the bottom and wing-nut on the top, long enough for 4-6 spools it would be around the same length as your pack. Up to you and your engineer background to figure out how to include them in the pack!"
You could slide them inside the binder's 3 rings by using 2 shorter rods...
Only a suggestion ...

Wow. I blinked and suddenly there are four pages of cool posts inspired by your ingenious binder. Very cool Ray. Great winter project. And imagine if someone started marketing a basic kit, with optional pages of materials for sale, already measured and stuffed into the little pockets and sleeves.
Love it.

I agree. Lance you are sure right about that. Ray, get on it....lol.

Three Layer Pocket Binder Inserts (set of ten / $5.00) Has anyone found these? I went to the local office supply store today, and did not find anything like this. I was also looking for a expandable folder with 3 rings. I didn't find that either. I was at the hobby shop next door, buying more little zip lock baggies to put more dubbing in. Getting low...as usual. (not on dubbing, on the bags...lol_ I saw one from Staples online...but it is a mini binder insert with 3 layers for coupons. If it were larger, it would work.

Kelly - Hold off buying the three-pocket organizer. I had a couple extras, after my kit was finished, so I popped them in the mail for you. Enjoy!
Oh, it turns out that William provided me with the solution for organizing my spooled materials. He gave me a couple very cleverly rigged wooden dowels, with sewing needles and wine corks (see photos below). They will hold a number of spools of thread, tinsel, silk etc., and have the added advantage of doubling as fly holders during tying demonstrations. (Thanks William! Brilliant little solution!)

If you look closely (in the lower left hand corner of the photo), you can see the cork holders in use as fly holders. They are stuck into a cork tying station that William built. Nice, easily portable work space.

Ray, you made my day once again! Thank you so much. Yes, I don't need more than 3. I love these newest ideas with the spools too. The more I think about it, my daughter may not get the chance to take that binder to her house. Mama just might claim that for more materials...rotflmbo.

Maybe it's the New Year and all, but I gotta say that the folks on this forum are the most down to earth, generous people I've had the pleasure to run across. Dang, but I like hanging out here.
