Davy's Skating Caddis SBS

[ScottP]

I know, it's not a flymph, but it is a softhackle, kinda, and a cool looking fly. Change colors to suit your needs.


hook - Dai Riki 280 #16
thread - MFC 8/0 dark olive
rib - Midge Krystal Flash pearl
abdomen/thorax - dubbing olive
wing - mule deer
wing case - Swiss Straw olive
hackle - partridge dyed tan


mash barb, start thread; tie in rib, wrap to bend




dub thread/dub abdomen to 60 % mark






counterwrap rib; tie off/trim






tie in wing case




clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair; cut to length, tie in with 2 soft loops, pull firmly (while holding) and let it flare








flatten/separate the wing; lock in place with a couple crossing wraps






trim butts/cover with thread




dub thorax






pull wing case forward between wings; tie off/trim




prep partridge/tie in by tip






wrap hackle, stroking fibers back; tie off/trim, half hitch x 2, SHHAN

WOW, that looks like a killer pattern for a certain hatch condition. Steve, this is really a fantastic SBS, as they all are. I usually see dries and think...I've got so many dries, but this...I might need this one. Great find and a fantastic tie.

I totally missed this! And oddly enough I just recently tied up a bunch of skating caddis, little tan jobs. This is a nice little fly Scott!

Great tutorial Scott. I fish a very similar dry. It doesn't use the partridge ( which I like very much by the way) and I use a strip of foam instead of the Swiss straw. The foam adds a lot of buoyancy and it grabs the hair making it more of a fan shape out to the sides. I leave a small bit of foam over the eye for a head. I have had good success with that fly on the Metolius as a matter of fact. I'm going to try the addition of the partridge.

I did something similar to Charlie Craven's Screaming Banshee, subbing foam for the deer hair back. Since it's a waking fly, I glued/squeezed/trimmed deer hair butts (from the wing) for the lip/forward wing.





I'll try subbing some 1mm foam for Swiss straw on this one and see how it works. Thanks for the suggestion.
