BWO Softhackle SBS
Lot's of input on this one. A variation on UC Steve's version (especially like the black rabbit wingcase; you could sub marabou); swapped out the dubbed body with fibers from the "other" side of a pheasant tail feather, per Larry Jurgens suggestion
http://lojsflytyingbugstuff.blogspot.co ... ooong.html
hook - Dai Riki 320 #16
thread - MFC 8/0 brown
rib - x-small wire copper
tail - pheasant tail (the "good" side)
abdomen - pheasant tail (the "other" side")
thorax - dubbing dark hare's ear/olive/brown/dun mix
wing case - black rabbit
hackle - brown hen
head - a bit more of the thorax
mash barb, start thread and tie in rib (should have tied in the hackle to start things off, but I forgot)
pull off a few pheasant tail fibers, measure (shank); tie in
pull off a few fibers from the other side, tie in by tips; wrap forward and tie off
counter-wrap the rib; helicopter and tie off
dub thorax
take a clump of rabbit (sans guard hare hair), tie in front of the thorax, fold back; trim over the abdomen
prep hackle, tie in; sweep fibers back (wet fingers help) and wrap
dub head; half hitch x 2, SHHAN
Regards,
Scott

That is very nicely done, Scott.

Oh boy. . That is a fine looking fly. I'll be tying some of these when I get home.

Oh wow! Great pattern and tutorial. I too, will be tying some of these. I will fish these with confidence.
Thanks Scott. Just yesterday I was thinking, "I hoping Scott adds another tutorial soon." Nice addition to the reference section.

Re: BWO Softhackle SBS
Nice! I will start incorporating that dark wing-case into a few patterns. I like the look of that.
I have not really noticed a "Good" side and "Other" side to a pheasant tail. Your's shows a much more distinct color difference than the few I have. I must have just have gotten lucky. I have noticed a difference between the center tail feathers and the lesser tail feathers. The lesser feathers are softer (thinner) and somewhat lighter than the primary tail feathers. I use them all pretty indiscriminately and interchangeably. Must be a little Scots blood in there somewhere.
