DUBBN,

Your Redquil collar tie got me to thinking about a simple stonefly.

Years ago I tied a simple stonefly nymph for fishing in January on the Boise River with ice freezing in our rod guides. We were there for a pre super bowl fly-tying show put on by the Ted Trueblood TU chapter and the Boise Valley Fly Fishers. I called it Black Ice since that was the primary ingredient.

Here is another variation...
Hook-Mustad 9671 #8
Thread-Black 3/0 Monocord
Tail-Black Krystal Flash
Body-Black Antron Hare
Rib-BR Red Ultra Wire
Collar-Purple Merino Wool with Rainbow Antron
Head-Silver Lined Red Glass Bead

There is no reason why that fly wouldn't catch a fish. Great job and I like the red bead.

I like the fact this pattern is tied in the round. Simpler construction than most stone fly patterns.

Well designed Bill. As always.

That is a very good looking pattern.

The Giant Stones that reside in the Colorado Freestone rivers, have a 5 year life cycle. They are most vulnerable in late Spring to early Summer when they are migrating to the shores to become adults. Your pattern would fit the bill nicely at that time.

It would also make an outstanding attractor
pattern, year round. I would not hesitate to use it in a three nymph set up.

Well done!!
