Brown Drake Nymph

Made these up for summer trip. They worked! Had in mind a brown drake nymph. Not sure if that’s what the fish took it for. Used the longer, lower barbs of grouse feathers for the tail and legs, and saved the tips for spiders (stay tuned). Abdomen is some kind of hare’s ear + antron blend with a wink of glimmer in the rib. Thorax is brown possum. Wingcase is turkey tail. Hook is 2x heavy, 2x long.

12 feathers = 24 flies (ya gotta love that kinda frugality...)

Gorgeous buggy nymphs.

Let’s hear more about that fishing trip. I can’t wait to see your spiders too.

I’d like to see one of those up close! Also, what size hook are you using?
Thank you

Tied on a 2x long size 14.

Trip was great! Dry fly nirvana. Big drakes, browns, bamboo.

The closer I look, the more I like every aspect of this pattern (color, profile, proportions, lively elements, fish-appeal, and execution). Marvelous in each category.

When are we going fishing? I need to “borrow” some flies... ;)

Well thanks! Trying to improve my fly photos. Bought the latest, greatest iPhone when my phone went wet-wading with me on a smallmouth trip a few weeks ago. Caught my biggest smallmouth ever, but it cost me an iPhone!

Thank you, truly appreciate it. There is also a wink of flash in the rib that doesn’t show up in the pics. Will post the material tomorrow. It’s a craft store find. Basically a very thin holo Mylar.

As for fishing- not sure, but couldn’t come soon enough.

I had almost exactly the same experience last spring. Hooked a big bass and when I was fighting the fish, misstepped and went down face first in the stream. My iPhone was in my chest pocket, but it fortunately survived the dunking. I’ve since upgraded to one of the newer versions, which are supposed to be more water resistant.

We’ll see... :? ;)
