Purple and Hen

Size 18
In about 6 weeks, close to Saint Patrick's Day, give or take a week or two, there will be a midge hatch on some local rivers. At times the hatch is so thick that the shucks look like a major oil slick floating down the river. A dark size 18 midge always produces fish. Sometimes in an epic way. I will also tie this pattern with a mole collar rather than the hen. That method is a tried and true method for me. Larva or Emergers, it doesnt seem to matter at that time.

Recipe please...
When you say “dark”, what range of colors do you use? Always purple, or do you also tye these in other colors?
Thank you for sharing another successful pattern.

Ray, Black and Gray, Black, and Gray and Black.
These are size 22, which I usually start with.
The way I use mole makes for such a god awful looking pattern, but I just love it.

Beautiful flies!!
I just have to tie some of the black ones with Mole.
Is that a black wire rib for weight?

No, the X-Small UTC wire is just for segmentation. I am sure it adds weight, but not enough for me. Weight is placed elsewhere in my set up.
The little black, mole collared emerger is what I start the day out with. It is a morph of mine that originated as a Roy Palm Biot Emerger. I hated glueing the biot to the hook, on tiny emergers, plus I prefer mole or Ostrich to hackle. That is how this homely little pattern came to be. Since then I add mole to alot of midge larva patterns. In effect making them an emerger.
The Roy Palm Biot Emerger, size 22.

You do great work. I am afraid those patterns would be too light in color for my application.

I also thought of using purple Ice dubbing for the thorax.

But now I have to shop for some different XS wire, gray Mole and hooks.
Have you tried a red wire rib?

You need Natural Gray Mole?
I have 1 and a half pelts. I would be happy to split the full pelt.
Let me know quick. I am literally headed home to pack my fly tying equipment as my wife and I are buying and moving to a small house we built. Empty Nesters here.
