How are you cutting the aluminum to shape? Is it soft enough to cut with scissors?

I bought a cheap pair of wire cutters at HD.
It bends easily and does not rust.
Often times dorsata stonefly nymphs are found on submerged woody material in the shallows by the banks, even in the Fall. I substitute 16 ga, copper wire (from Hobby Lobby) for the lead wire, then the flat aluminum on top of the wire.
My theory is the trout are not looking for exact detail on the big stonefly nymphs. I have never found a reason to add the wing holsters on the top of the thorax. Shape, size, color, and movement of the legs I feel are the prominent features to get the trout's attention.

My old job of Aircraft Corrosion Control just went into shock when I read the list of Metals,
Copper wire binding Aluminum to a Steel hook.
, in my mind I see that mixture
looking like an Alka-Selzer in the bottom of a glass of water.

I have had a real fondness for Bitch Creek and Girdle Bug variations since I got my copy of
Montana Trout Flies by George Grant.

John, i use them as an attractor in a three nymph set up.
I too use weights on the leader to get the rig down. That being said, i do add lead wire to some of the patterns.
Black thread is used for the weighted nymphs, Brown for the unweighted Stones.

Dubbn, don't you also have the Pteronarcys californica nymphs (Giant Salmonfly)?
Yes we do. They are normally very dark Olive
