I've been wrestling with using pearsall's thread with the bobbins that I currently own. I looked online for a solution to my bobbin fitting the spool and saw a few ideas. This took about a half hr to complete and works pretty well. Thought I would share with the group. The material used is left over from my bathroom remodel. It's 1/4" solid surface counter material. The project cost me nothing as I had the materials on hand and already owned the tools.


The first step was to use a 1" hole saw to get the disks


The next step was to use a 7/8" wood boring bit to make a recess for the Piersall's spool to set in to keep from slipping

Next put a bolt through both disks and sand to even them out with a power drill

Clean out any uneven areas in the recess with a dremmel tool

Check for fit and the finished product. The width is very similar to a Danville's spool and works pretty well

As for buying some, it would depend on the cost. Anything over $10 and I'll just get more of the Wasatch "Mini" bobbin holders, of which I already have three .

Thanks Bill and Ray, I get my obsessive compulsive traits from my grand dad. He was a machinist, so he believed he could make anything better and cheaper. . He might have been successful at improving things, but I would bet very few of his creations saved him money. I guess that wasn't the point. I know he enjoyed saying he made it!! I still have several of his wood shed creations in my possession. Brings back alot of memories. As for the cost Ray, I am going to market them for $120.00 per pair. with free shipping.

Or you can cut the ends off a regular thread spool,drill out the Pearsall's spool center to match the regular spool and insert a matching piece of dowel to hold the three parts together for an ordinary bobbin.

Somewhere on this forum there is an excellent SBS by Letumgo Ray on his design of such an adapter. Also brilliant like the above.

roadkill... love your idea... now if I can just tie enough flies to use up a spool so I can perform that trick..

We topped out at 30 inches of snow at my place this week...the nighttime temps in the single digits and low teens... its going to be tough on the Crooked for a couple weeks..
