Re: Custom Leaders - My next adventure
Hi Ray, I think I've given you some of my hand tied leaders in the past. Here are a couple of things that I've learned along the way, feel free to experiment: I tie my blood knots with 3 turns, then wet them in a small plastic dish before drawing them tight. Lubrication, good...fiction, bad. Elimina...

Re: Top 6 Commonly Used Hen Neck Colors?
DD, Weidner was a hackle grower that I believe was located in Pennsylvania. I'm unsure if the operation is still in business. The cards/packaging only say "Weidner Hackle", no address, or contact info. I just did a Google search and came up with nothing. I recall talking to Charlie Collins...

Re: Top 6 Commonly Used Hen Neck Colors?
I like to tie and fish non-descript, buggy, small wets. I tend to fish dun, brown/tan, cream, and black patterns. I use a lot of Charlie Collins's hen capes, one of a kind, mottled, speckled, and quite interesting. Cree hen is nice. I've tied some of Atherton's wets in the flymph style this year, an...

Re: Gartside's Sparrow
Well done, Mr. Bailey...you read my mind! There is also a hyper link in the text for fishing the Sparrow-which is very helpful. Jack always snapped the tips off the pheasant "aftershaft" or "philoplume" feathers, so that they wouldn't break and unwind while making the head. He al...

Re: Gartside's Sparrow
Hi John, I was gifted a "step by step" frame that Jack did for the Sparrow. Maybe next time Ray visits he can photograph it for us. There are several You Tube videos on line, Hans Weilenmann did one of the best I've seen for tying the Sparrow. I'll put up the original dressing later today....

Re: Gartside's Sparrow
Ron, Thanks for posting the photo your very well-tied Sparrow, and story about Jack. I got to meet him in 1991 when I was stationed in South Weymouth, MA. I also learned how to tie the pattern from him, and it has been a favorite, go to fly for many years. The United Fly Tyer meetings, running into ...

Re: Phil Anderson's magic
Charlie Collins sells bags of "tailing hackle" that have some good skater type hackles. Fun to tie, fun to fish, and something different to show the trout. Tom S. posted some great info, and his summary on fishing them, in my experience was spot on! It is really fun to watch a trout come o...

Re: Winged wet fly spinners
Hi John.
I think I may have given you one or two of those wet spinner patterns a couple of years ago in Roscoe.
Tom, for sure!
