The Classic Trout rod is the best deal in the entire sport.

Re: Frank Sawyer's Nymphs

Yeah, the Sawyer method of nymphing is the game elevated. I've pulled it off a few times. Not easy. You really need to put the time into it. But when it works...the feeling is like no other.

Re: Rods for fishing flymphs and soft hackles

I own two 8 foot Jenkins bamboo rods. The cast perfectly for me and have a magnificient casting feel. My sole graphite is a surprisingly nice Redington Classic Trout, 9' 5wt. For around $150, this rod is equal in performance to the old Sage LL from the early 90s. I also own a 7 ft Echo fiberglass.

Re: A new small stream rod...on the cheap.

There's a nice creek in Southern Minnesota with a goodly number of nicely sized browns. The "dean" of that stream is a farm boy who fishes that same Eagle Claw rod, only he sprayed it with flat black lacquer. Fishes with two nymphs only. He liked to show you the pictures of his catches. Yo...

Re: Materials

I'm 90 percent soft hackle fishing when fishing wet. But I tie the Leadwing Coachman and the Hares Ear with the traditional duck quill wings. Took me a while. Once you've got it, however, you've got it. If you can find someone who's noted for tying the traditional wets, as him or her to help you. It...

Re: Who Fishes Wood?

I had to sell off my bamboo rods during the Great Recession, 2008. Fished fiberglass until just a few years ago, and got back with bamboo through a stroke of good fortune. Somehow, I lucked into two rods by Robert Bolt, an 8ft 5-wt, and a 7'1/2 ft 4-wt. I also own an 8ft Granger Special that was res...

Re: Pass Lake Special (Paape) & (Srubenvoll)

:?: I used to tie it with a peacock herl body. Great fly. My two streamers are the Muddler and a Pass lake. To me, peacock herl with white wing and brown hackle is a Coachman wet fly. John Yeah. Very close. But it's on a streamer hook, and the calf hair is long and more sizable. There's also a Pass...

Re: Frank Sawyer's Nymphs

Sawyer often spoke of the pt wire as "red" in color. But copper wire has often been termed as "red" by the English. My beagle is ginger colored. But I could just as easily say he's red. So, copper it is for the pheasant tail. That is...according to ME! (lol)
