Re: Quill-slip wings vs. Dabbler-type wings

Thanks for confirming my thinking on the dabbler/bronze mallard wing-type, UC Steve -- that they're very effective stream flies when swinging. I think I'll have to tie up a few this fall after all...and give them a try on some searuns. Are there any patterns that any of you would suggest as favorite...

Re: Quill-slip wings vs. Dabbler-type wings

Thanks for the information guys. I'm looking forward to tying both types this winter, but I have a feeling that I'll focus mostly on the dabbler-type; they're just really cool looking to me.... I just picked up Dave Hughes's "Wet Flies", so I'll read up on both types.

Quill-slip wings vs. Dabbler-type wings

I'm not sure if I've got the names right, but what are the main differences between these two types of winged wet flies...other than the parts/types of feathers being used for the wings? I guess I'm interested in which is more traditional? Is one more common than the other in the world of winged wet...

Re: Team of flies but no droppers.

Thanks, fellas, for the welcome. Yeah, the reversed spiders have a well-earned reputation around here, especially, in the tidal stretches. I should probably fish them more, but I have a fair amount of success just fishing basic soft hackles. I'm going attempt to tie some winged wets this winter when...

Re: Team of flies but no droppers.

Hi, guys/gals.... New guy here. I fish northern Oregon coastal streams for searun cutthroat, and I've been using this setup for a year or so now when I'm fishing soft hackles. It works great for me, as I can do more casting...and less lobbing. Very few tangles. I probably fish this way about 30% of ...
