Re: W.C. Stewart's Definition of Upstream Fishing?
So- With regards to fishing upstream w/ wet flies, are you all suggesting 10-15 foot casts (assuming 9 ft leader, 2-3 ft tippet)? Typically with fishing upstream with weighted nymphs, I'm casting 30-40 feet at most here in the Driftless region.

Re: Depth of Water to Best Fish Wets
Thank you. My interest in soft hackles is not superficial. I'll get back to them, likely NZ-style as you mentioned. I've just been having great luck with beadhead nymphs.

Depth of Water to Best Fish Wets
Hello Everyone- It's been a few months since I last posted here but have had a wonderful summer fishing the streams of northeastern Iowa. I've come across a sort of issue, however. After finding some confidence in spiders at my nearest stream which is often no more than 3-4ft deep. Lots of riffles a...

Re: great day fishing spiders
The stream was interesting -- about half a mile of nice scattered riffles with deep 4+ foot pools. I didn't have any luck with spiders or flymphs (even the tungsten weighted ones, bead behind the hackle) in the deeper pools but did very well when I changed to simple weighted nymphs. The pools varied...

great day fishing spiders
Fished some partridge and green spiders today in some select riffles and pools and really experienced some aggressive takes. I had to cast to the far side of a riffle adjacent to an elevated bank where I saw some trout rising. It was an overcast day and I was having some trouble seeing the junction ...

Ray Bergman's theory; Sun behind or in front?
I was reading the chapter in "Trout" last night in regards to keeping the sun at your back. This, to me, makes perfect sense as long as the light isn't coming from down low whereby your shadow, or the shadow of the fly line, spreads over the surface of the water. Before this, I've always r...
